What Mad Universe (発狂した宇宙 lit. Hakkyō-shita Uchū) is the 10th episode of the Parasyte -the maxim- (寄生獣 セイの格率,, Kiseijū Sei no Kakuritsu) anime series.

Overview[]

Injured by a surprise attack from Yuko, Shimada loses his mind and starts a killing spree. Worried about Murano, Shinichi decides to confront him head on to protect her. After Shimada is killed, the government takes his body and examines it, in which they learn new ways to identify the species.

Summary[]

Shinichi is alerted by Migi to Shimada's killing intent. Yuko splashes the Parasite with toxic chemicals and narrowly escapes. Unable to maintain a human face, Shimada goes on a rampage through the school compound. Under Migi's advice, Shinichi evacuates along with his classmates, but notices Murano's class is missing.

After recovering from a strong emotional reaction at seeing several dismembered students, he locates Murano but is unable to save the two found with her. Carrying her outside the school building, Shinichi kills Shimada by throwing a rock through his heart from outside the range of the latter's Parasite sensing ability.

During a government meeting, a means of distinguishing humans from Parasites is revealed: Parasite head hair, when plucked, undergoes brief spasms. A trend starts in Shinichi's neighbourhood where people greet each other by pulling out a strand of each others' hair.

The episode ends with Murano thanking Shinichi for saving her.
